Heike Pickett Gallery in Versailles, KY (Lexington) continues to show choice bronze sculptures in the gallery as well as human scale ceramic sculpture in the gardens of the oldest home in Versailles. I am also showing Bronze and Ceramic work at Gallerie Hertz in Louisville.
These two pieces have been scraped and burnished and await picking. The clay is now leather hard, stiff but still damp. You can see some of the rough areas where an extra layer of clay was added and roughened by fingertips in advance of picking a texture with ice pick like tools.
When I look at this picture of the shelves in my studio I am confronted with possibilites and history. My process involes making models, many more than will ever be realized. Some of these models were the basis for new work, but most were not. I might someday pick through them looking for ideas that were overlooked. But my work has moved on. Lately I have been making maquettes from styrofoam, glue, toothpicks and wax. They are leading into more geometric work.
