I have always been intuitive, reactive and spontaneous. I love improvisation and chance. This may not seem obvious when looking at my large sculptures that must be crafted over weeks or months.
Some of the smallest work is directly improvised, but the larger sculptures derive from thumbnail sketches, carved, modeled or constructed maquettes that are culled for the rare idea that can direct the creation of new work.

The clay sculptures are built from fat coils which are pinched to about 3/8" thickness and raise the wall of the sculptures 3"or 4" per day. When the sculpture is complete, surfaces and edges are refined with metal scrapers.

The stony textures are produced by chipping the nearly dry clay with an ice pick like tool. After bis firing, the clay is stained with copper and glazes are sprayed on. Some areas are left unglazed. The clay is then fired to cone 8 stoneware temperature in a reducing atmosphere.
